Green Gold Energy and AMPYR Transform Port Augusta Coal Site into Northern Battery
November 2025 – Adelaide, Australia
Green Gold Energy (GGE) and AMPYR Australia (AMPYR) have announced a partnership to develop the Davenport Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in South Australia. As part of the collaboration, the project has been renamed the Northern Battery, marking a major step forward in the state’s renewable energy transition.
Northern Battery: A Landmark Storage Project for South Australia
Construction of the Northern Battery is set to begin in 2026. The 270 MW battery platform will deliver up to eight hours of energy storage, strengthening South Australia’s grid reliability and supporting AMPYR’s goal of 6 GWh of operational battery storage by 2030 — enough to meet 10–20% of Australia’s future storage demand.
AMPYR and GGE will develop the project on the site of the former Northern Power Station in Port Augusta. GGE, which has led the project since 2023, will continue to support its development. Relocating to the former power station precinct leverages existing infrastructure and minimises community impacts, while repurposing industrial land for renewable energy helps unlock the full potential of South Australia’s solar and wind resources. Once operational, the Northern Battery will provide enough energy to power over 300,000 homes.
Leadership Commentary
